Red in the Ledger: Building Ranger in Constructed

The pre-release is over, hope everyone who was able to attend events had a great time and stayed safe. I managed to make it to the Wellington event and came second with my good stuff Viserai deck, only losing to Metrix’ very own Isaac Olssen, piloting a Dash “Noodle” deck, turned out it was just as powerful as he thought!

Today we are looking at one of my favourite classes from the new set, Ranger and creating some decklists to test with. Lets take a look at some of the key cards in constructed for the Ranger class, first up is Red in the Ledger:

If you read my previous limited article, I think this card is up there with one of the best in the format, it disrupts every deck in some way and is one the best cards to pair Azalea’s activated ability. If the Ranger class becomes prominent in the format, people will need to build their decks to be able to block this card. Next up are two cards that can create one of the craziest wombo-combos in the game:

Clearly, these cards were made for each other, with enough reload effects you can contiually play Endless Arrow for free hitting for at least four damage each time. The down side is that the arrow only hits for four by itself and can easily be blocked but you can get around this by giving it dominate or pumping it. Is it any good? Im not sure but it is definitely powerful enough to warrant finding out. Our last stop before we get into any decklists is the Ranger Legendary, Skullbone Crosswrap:

Personally I think this is the best legendary revealed in the set, it does everything you want against every class and offers you value for free every turn. The opt effect is not as powerful as say, Mask of Momentum but having arcane barrier means that you can still run three barrier effects and Fyendals Spring Tunic against Wizard which is pretty valuable. Not only that it means all of your equipment slots against Runeblade can be dedicated to aggressive armour like Snap Dragon Scalars and Bull’s Eye Bracers.

There are two main archetypes I will be focusing on today:

Aggro – Utilising red pump effects, arrows and Go Again

Combo – Setting up a massive Endless Arrow/Rapid Fire turn.

Aggro:

The aggro version of the build is pretty self explanatory, you play a bunch of efficient pumps, arrows and go again cards and what I think is the best aggressive card printed to date:

In Ranger, this card is basically Nimblism on steroids. Being able to set multiple of these cards into the arsenal on a single turn using Reload effects negates the downside of the card and puts the rate on it through the roof. By playing cards that inherently have go again, you can then take advantage of the additional cards that you draw. On to the list, here is my first take on a go again Ranger:

Equipment:

1 Skullbone Crosswrap
1 Bull’s Eye Bracers
1 Fyendal’s Spring Tunic
1 Snapdragon Scalers

Main Deck (60):

3 Art of War
3 Enlightened Strike
3 Hamstring Shot (Red)
3 Head Shot (Red)
2 Nimble Strike (Red)
3 Nimblism (Red)
3 Nock the Deathwhistle
3 Plunder Run (Blue)
3 Plunder Run (Red)
3 Plunder Run (Yellow)
3 Ravenous Rabble (Red)
3 Razor Reflex (Red)
3 Red in the Ledger
1 Ridge Rider Shot (Blue)
3 Ridge Rider Shot (Red)
3 Sic ‘Em Shot (Red)
3 Snatch (Red)
3 Take Aim (Blue)
3 Take Aim (Red)
3 Take Aim (Yellow)
3 Three of a Kind

Im not sold on Three of a Kind as it requires you to play at least three Reload effects afterwards and I am not sure you will have enough in the deck to pull this off. In any case, it is worth testing this early on to see how it plays. With all of our cards costing one or less, we are only looking to draw one blue card per turn so ten is the most we want to be playing. More reload effects would be ideal to take advantage of plunder run and our arrows but the ones I haven’t played are fairly sub-par and I don’t think this is the deck to use Rapid Fire.

Speaking of Rapid Fire, lets take a quick look at a Combo version of Ranger:

Main Deck (60):

3 Art of War
3 Endless Arrow
2 Energy Potion
3 Enlightened Strike
1 Eye of Ophidia
3 Head Shot (Red)
3 Nock the Deathwhistle
3 Plunder Run (Red)
3 Plunder Run (Yellow)
3 Rapid Fire
3 Razor Reflex (Red)
3 Razor Reflex (Yellow)
3 Red in the Ledger
3 Ridge Rider Shot (Red)
3 Rifting (Red)
3 Sic ‘Em Shot (Red)
3 Silver the Tip (Red)
3 Snatch (Red)
3 Take Aim (Blue)
3 Take Aim (Red)
3 Take Aim (Yellow)

The equipment is the same as the aggro deck. With this version of the deck, we are trying to play as many Endless Arrows on a single turn as possible. Razor Reflex pulls double duty here as a way to gain go again when you dont draw Rapid Fire but also pumps your Endless Arrow to get it over those pesky defensive cards. You could move further down the combo path by playing cards like Pursuit of Knowledge to set up a massive turn and more defense reactions, but they don’t play well with the other agressive cards in your deck and frankly, I hate defense reactions.

For those of you after a budget list, I’ve created a cheaper version of the aggro deck below. I would not recommend making a budget combo version of the deck, the higher rarity cards really are required for the deck to function.

3 Hamstring Shot (Red)
3 Head Shot (Red)
3 Nimble Strike (Red)
2 Nimble Strike (Yellow)
3 Nimblism (Blue)
3 Nimblism (Red)
3 Plunder Run (Blue)
3 Plunder Run (Red)
3 Plunder Run (Yellow)
3 Ravenous Rabble (Red)
3 Razor Reflex (Red)
2 Razor Reflex (Yellow)
1 Ridge Rider Shot (Blue)
3 Ridge Rider Shot (Red)
3 Searing Shot (Red)
3 Sic ‘Em Shot (Red)
2 Silver the Tip (Red)
3 Snatch (Red)
3 Take Aim (Blue)
3 Take Aim (Red)
3 Take Aim (Yellow)
2 Vigor Rush (Red)

For the equipment, replace Fyendal’s Spring Tunic with Vest of the First Fist and Crosswrap with Talismanic Lens. Look forward to seeing what people come up with for their Ranger builds, and be sure to check out the next article on my favourite new class, Wizard coming out later this week. Lastly, I made it into the first Metrix Daily Trial Event, I’m playing the combo version of the Ranger build above, lets see how it goes!
